Studying systems deeply
Over the past decade, I’ve worked across different layers of the web, from Linux-based systems and cloud hosting environments to frontend development and web platforms like WordPress.
Like many developers, I’ve used a wide range of technologies along the way. But over time, I’ve come to appreciate the value of studying systems deeply rather than just using them at the surface level.
Modern ecommerce platforms are a great example of this.
Shopify and WooCommerce
Platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce power millions of businesses today. Yet most development around them focuses on themes, plugins, or quick integrations, without much attention to how the systems themselves actually work.
This site is my space to explore those platforms more deliberately.
What this deep dive covers
Over the coming months, I’ll be documenting a structured deep dive into the technologies behind modern ecommerce platforms, starting with Shopify and eventually expanding into WooCommerce as well.
That means looking at things like:
- how Shopify stores are structured
- how Liquid templates work
- how themes render and interact with the browser
- how APIs and apps extend the platform
- how performance and architecture affect real stores
Some posts will be short notes while I learn and experiment. Others will go deeper into specific technical areas.
The goal
The goal is simple: understand these systems properly and document the process along the way.
If you’re interested in how modern ecommerce platforms actually work under the hood, you’ll probably enjoy following along.
